Van Zyl has been one of the fastest hurdlers in the world over 400m in recent years but has consistently suffered frustration when competing on the major stage.
The Bloemfontein-born runner, who burst onto the scene when becoming the world junior champion in 2002, entered both the 2007 and 2011 World Championships leading the rankings but failed to turn that into victory.
He did not make it through the heats in Osaka before claiming only bronze four years later in Daegu, despite holding the four fastest times over the barriers leading into the event.
The three-time African champion, who also won the 2006 Commonwealth Games title, was fifth in the Olympic final at Beijing 2008 on his debut at the Games.
